I came across these posts while surfing the internet and thought it would be cool to combine them, add pictures, and then post here for my readers. The story was told well, I like that it's kind of an "open world" story, something you discover in the order you choose to look through things to some degree, and as intensely as you choose to. This is an exception to that! I got this game in a bundle, so I hadn't read the description and didn't know what to expect from it beyond the warnings at the beginning. I've always thought these 'phones-as-an-extension-of-their-user' games are really interesting, but I'm not a fan of how most of them are done. The way it's all integrated is immersive, extremely well though out, and balances storytelling with gameplay really well. The art is gorgeous, the music is gorgeous. The tl dr is: I really, really enjoyed this. I didn't find the artwork to be a key attraction or detraction to the game. Visuals - 3/5 - The pictures were a crucial addition to help get the narrative across. There was a bit of information overload at the start, but this was the best part of the game for me. Mechanics - 4.5/5 - Puzzles can often be frustrating, but because the search for clues kept unfolding new pieces of the narrative, it made the process a joy rather than a chore. But for me, the ending to this story is not something to be applauded, and lauding that decision soured the entire game. Story - 3/5 - As a narrative, the story is well-rounded and immersive. I just can't get behind the message this game wants to get across. The puzzles make use of this feature well. The creator makes use of the unique interface to spin a compelling narrative. I can't deny that this game is well-made. Note: I played this game on my phone, which I would recommend for the optimal experience. It's a clever way of delivering a narrative, with you discovering more about Sam, the more you investigate the phone. "This new phone has a lot to explore, even if you may not see it on the first look. But it has the same small moments of revelation, all of which come together to form a story in its own neat yet meandering way." When the council agrees to his proposal, Flik actually believes they have accepted the merits of his plan, whereas the council actually saw it as a convenient way of simply keeping Flik from wreaking any more havoc with their food-gathering activities.įlik finds his way to the city garbage under a trailer, where he mistakes a group of recently fired circus performers, whose act had collapsed into chaos, for the warrior bugs he's seeking. Later, while he is being admonished by the royal council of the colony, Flik proposes a plan to recruit warrior bugs to fight off the grasshoppers. In exchange for a temporary reprieve from the grasshoppers, the ants are given until the end of autumn to produce an offering of twice the usual amount. The grasshoppers arrive once a season to extort food from the ants, supposedly in return for protection from bigger bugs, but while working with an invention to pick grain more efficiently, an ant named Flik accidentally destroys the annual offering that the ants were collecting to appease the grasshoppers. The plot of A Bug's Life focuses on an outcast ant named Flik who recruits a group of circus bugs to help him rid his colony of evil grasshoppers. “He said he wanted to put 25 outdoorsmen with guns out in the field,” recalls Mike Kirkland, an invasive animal biologist who was charged with assembling the original team.ĭamage done by the pythons to south Florida ecosystems has become so acute in recent years that the quest to stop has turned into a collective crusade. This viral video led the executive director of the South Florida water management district, who was horrified by what he saw, to create the district’s own Python Elimination Program, in 2017. In December 2016, a YouTube video showed a Burmese python in Big Cypress national preserve, next to the Everglades, strangling an alligator. A 2012 study in the Everglades suggested that a disturbing number of mammals have been swallowed by the invasive species: a spike in python sightings since 2000 coincided with a more than 90% reduction in raccoons, opossums and rabbits.īut it’s not just the smaller, soft animals who have been attacked. It’s estimated that there are tens of thousands of pythons now living in the Florida wild. One was recently discovered coiled up on a floating crab pot more than 15 miles out to sea. Masters of camouflage, they can slide by an eagle-eyed biologist in just a few inches of water, and they can cover huge distances. They can inflict a nasty wound on humans – when Van Gorder was bitten, it took five months for one of the broken teeth to work its way out – but the chances of anything more serious happening are slim (though not impossible). Able to grow to more than 20ft in length, these stealthy invaders ambush their prey, squeeze until the prey stops breathing and then split their jaw apart to take the prey whole. They do, however, have an uncanny ability to swallow things significantly larger than their own heads. “My heart stopped,” Van Gorder recalls, though now the size seems, to both of them, almost quaint.īurmese pythons have no natural predators here. Determined, they acquired another permit (no longer required for 22 FWC-managed areas as of 2017, when the commission declared open season on pythons) and kept looking for another two months, until they came across an eight-footer. “We usually achieve our goals,” Koehler says, still disappointed by their efforts in the challenge. Those who had caught the most and also the longest pythons shared in over $16,000 of prizes. Photograph: Charles Ommanney/Getty ImagesĪfter 80 hours of trudging through cypress forests and freshwater marshland, Koehler and Van Gorder did not catch a single snake, but fellow participants removed 106 pythons. “They bring one in a bag and they drop it on the ground, and they say: ‘Catch it!’” says Van Gorder, adding that this is where they learned the safest way to grab a snake is by its head. Then they attended a live-capture tutorial, also offered by the FWC. The couple registered and were issued a permit to hunt in designated areas of south Florida. (The first was held in 2013 there have been none since.) A month-long public hunt held on a vast expanse of state forests and other government-owned land north of Everglades national park, the challenge was designed to cull numbers while also raising public awareness about a growing ecological problem. Koehler and Van Gorder’s love affair with Burmese pythons began in 2016, when the FWC held its second python challenge. The other four days the couple are usually out chasing pythons as members of Patric: the Python Action Team – Removing Invasive Constrictors, which is managed by the Florida fish and wildlife conservation commission (FWC). Three days a week, Koehler runs Hair of the Dog with her partner of 31 years, Peggy van Gorder. “Peggy’s been bit once, but really, we’re very careful.” “I have never been bit,” she proudly adds. "The game designer in me wants to make a decision about the quality and whatnot, and then the other guy says, 'no, no, I'm responsible for those people, and I need to make a decision that makes sure the studio doesn't shut down, and that it's good for at least two other years afterwards'. "President, CEO, responsible for 35 families," Désilets said. That said, Désilets did acknowledge that sometimes "the realities of running a games studio" triggered a disconnect between his role as a CEO of Panache and that of being a game designer. "So please don't take notes today as we talk, mainly because I don't know how to make a video game." My people are pissed, by the way," he added. "And we know for a fact that some just invented some elements in the game - like there is no fire and you cannot ride any horses, even though one reviewer said 'oh, it wasn't that great when you ride a horse'. And since Ancestors is so different, some of them went 'urgh, I don't have time for this'."ĭésilets went further, suggesting some reviewers "just invented some elements" of their reviews, too, and insisted that the game's concept alone "needs an hour maybe two" to be understood. "It is part of our industry - they have to review games, and they have 15 of them to review in one week, and sometimes they don't have time. "We know for a fact that some reviewers actually didn't play the game," he added. We made some harsh decisions in order to ship the game, and we wanted it to be different. "But people expected my studio of 35 people to ship a game that is really close to Assassin's Creed, and it's just not possible. "I'm used to having bigger numbers than that, so it's the elephant in the room," Désilets told attendees of Reboot Develop Red (thanks, GI.biz), referring to the typical higher scores achieved by Assassin's Creed games. Former Assassin's Creed developer Patrice Désilets has hit out at reviewers of his new game Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, insisting some critics "didn't play the game" because of the game's mediocre aggregate score on Metacritic. You can explore where the oil went in our interactive. As much as 20 percent of the spilled oil may have ended up on top of and in the seafloor, damaging deep sea corals and potentially damaging other ecosystems that are unseen from the surface. Not all the oil made its way to the surface, however. Some oil sunk to the seafloor by gluing together falling particles in the water such as bacteria and phytoplankton to form marine snow. It turned out adding dispersant had an unforeseen consequence-it increased the area that the oil traveled by 49 percent, increasing the area impacted by the spill. This plume formed because chemical dispersants, released into the water to break up the oil so it could wash away, allowed the oil to mix with seawater and stay suspended below the surface. Some hovered suspended in the midwater after rising from the wellhead like a chimney and forming several layers of oil, dispersant and seawater mixtures drifting down current during the spill a 22-mile long oil plume was reported. Some floated to the ocean's surface to form oil slicks, which can spread more quickly by being pushed by winds. Once the oil left the wellhead, it spread throughout the water column. Over the course of 87 days, the damaged Macondo wellhead, a part of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, located around 5,000 feet beneath the ocean's surface, leaked an estimated 3.19 million barrels (over 130 million gallons) of oil into the Gulf of Mexico-making the spill the largest accidental ocean spill in history. You can explore the spill in our interactive and read on for more information. Researchers are still trying to understand the spill and its impact on marine life, the Gulf coast, and human communities. Additionally, numerous scientists and researchers descended upon the Gulf region to gather data. Immediately after the explosion, workers from BP and Transocean (the rig operators), and many government agencies tried to control the spread of the oil to beaches and other coastal ecosystems using floating booms to contain surface oil and chemical oil dispersants to break it down underwater. Scientists divide the ocean into at least three zones, and the deep ocean accounts for about three-quarters of Earth’s total ocean volume. The well was located over 5,000 feet beneath the water’s surface in the vast frontier of the deep sea-a permanently dark environment, marked by constantly cold temperatures just above freezing and extremely high pressures. By the time the well was capped on J( 87 days later), an estimated 3.19 million barrels of oil had leaked into the Gulf. Within days of the Apexplosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico that killed 11 people, underwater cameras revealed the damaged wellhead pipe was leaking oil and gas on the ocean floor about 42 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill is recognized as the worst oil spill in U.S. |
